Questions for people who have made comics or worked in a print shop of some capacity.

I wanted to ask what the lamination for covers is called I was thinking like eightball no. 13-18 where its like a satin gloss on the outside cover and then the inside cover feels like uncoated paper. i'm assuming the cover is printed on uncoated paper and then fixed with some sort of chemical or wash but i'm entirely not sure. if anyone knows anything about this or what any of the substances used are called i'd really appreciate it. thx bye edit: actually the bubbles BAT KID book has what im talking about too (great book BTW)

I am in my later twenties and I just am really falling in love with learning to make comics and zines. I really am wanting to make a small personal zine about my addiction. Or would it be smarter to find something and submit it to a more established thing?

i'd self publish your first few mini books. It'll teach you about how to set up a book and itll show you what you like about your own work when it's printed. I'd look up "pagination" how to set up a "saddle stitch book" and find a kinkos or some copy center near you.

Here's something that's been bugging me -- I'd love to hear everyone's experience/thoughts on file resolution for printing B&W lineart.
The conventional wisdom, I think, is that 600 DPI lineart is fine and 1200 DPI is ideal. I've always stuck with 600 myself and been fine, but find myself unhappy with the print quality of a few recent projects. So maybe I need to jump up to 1200? Or 800? Or perhaps I'm just seeing the limits of digital printing compared to offset.
Another issue is that I've found many digital printers won't accept higher than 600 DPI files, either as a explicit rule or because their file upload system makes handing over a 1200 DPI file untenable.

I saw some discussion around this not too long ago on Twitter, and I think Domino/Austin was involved in that. And that needing higher than 600 came down to the type of printing. Like offset needs to be 1200.

Living the Line a Youtube channel/publisher has a series called "Paper to Pixel to Paper Again" which goes pretty in depth with scanning and printing line art. Haven't watched them all yet but planning on it. The latest in that series goes over their current project PLAZA by Yokoyama Yuichi which is cool. www.youtube.com/channel/UCqAFV55Yix8nA4q45A4QWCgThey were also on another channel awhile ago talking about scanning and thought it was very informative. Watched it a few months ago but pretty sure they go pretty in depth on what DPI you should be scanning and why. youtu.be/NCScqEzOGlc
