So I recently got a new computer and I'm hoping to get a home printer and scanner soon. I plan to get a Brother laser printer. but for scanning, for the past year or so I've been going to the public library and scanning my pages on their nice big Xerox machine that can handle up to 11x17. And I know I'm not going to find something small/affordable that can do that big. But I normally draw on 9x12, and it doesn't seem like many home scanners do bigger than 8.5x11, or maybe 8.5x14. Does anyone have any recommendations for a flatbed that might do 9x12? Or does everyone just digitally stitch things together and it's not a big deal?
thanks!

I feel like flatbed a3 scanners are always pretty expensive. In Australia you can get a Brother A3 printer/scanner for 300 bucks or so. ( the current model a MFC-J6730DW) not a flat bed of course. Like most home printers, pretty annoying to keep the printer working. My model is about ten years old, the printer is long dead and it has a constant software error but you can plug in the usb cord and still scan. But these things are pretty big machines. Flat beds seem to go for as little as 800. Or maybe a cheap ebay deal? Crazy prices.

Photomerge in Photoshop is pretty amazing and does a great job at this... Not sure if your a PS user or not. Not sure about alternatives either.

I draw usually on A4 due to the scanner size issue. I'm digressing here a bit, but just read a strip on TCJ that was mentioning about page sizes in relation to scanners, and it was a pretty good one. www.tcj.com/andre-valente-day-three/

That strip is great!
I ended up getting one that can scan up to legal size 8.5"x11", which will work for most of my work that I do on 9x12 (if I remember to leave some gutter space).
I also use Clip Studio Paint, so no nice Photomerge tool. But it's pretty simple lining things up when I need to...I did a 4-panel strip on 11x14 to try it out. Though anything bigger would be a pain probably, if it required merging more than 2 scans.

Does anyone know anything about this scanner? Trying to find something that'll scan A3, feel like it'd be a good long term investment. If anyone here has an A3 sized scanner at home, would love to know what you use!

Been on the fence about buying that scanner for past couple years James. Hoping someone in the scene has road tested it haha

I'm also curious about an affordable A3/11x17 scanner but have never had any luck! I dig around every few years, and have repeatedly come to the conclusion that stitching pages together--or just drawing at 8.5x11 or smaller--is a better solution than a large format scanner that, in the best of circumstances, will still be expensive.

I'm using a Brother MFC model I got ten years ago. I don't love it for printing in color, and will just go to the 7-11 up the street if I need a clean, artistic color image. But it scans and prints at A3 size, and cost about $300, so that's incredible. I can scan directly to my iPad as well.
The main weaknesses it has is that the scanning has to be color or black and white, using their software. No proper grayscale. So doing art with blue line pencils isn't of any use with it. I've shifted to a light table, so that's not an issue these days.
It's not perfect, but between price and ability, it hits a sweet spot, and I've definitely got my money's worth out of it. I'm using it ten times a week at the moment.

Been on the fence about buying that scanner for past couple years James. Hoping someone in the scene has road tested it haha I ended up buying it (got arts funding from the province I'm in, so was able to take the risk). It works perfectly for my purposes which is just scanning in 11x17 bristol with line art. However scanning in colour seems to be fucked, very inaccurate - but perhaps I need to mess around with settings more (also max resolution appears to be 600dpi). I don't really do colour non-digitally at the moment, so it suits me ok for now. All in all, works for big comic art. That's my review!

I have a Canon 9000F Mark II that I got as an open box discount at Staples like ten years ago for I think less than $200. It's only 9x12 but scans like a dream, never had any problems with it. Goes up to 1200dpi I think, but anything over 600 is overkill IMHO.

I use Epson WF-7710, which I got on clearance at Staples few years back. Oversized scanner, up to 17". Works like a charm
