I'm going to be in Manhattan for <48 hours in May. Any good shops, comic or just cool book stores, that are open kind of early or late? I'll have two evenings to do stuff and one morning with time to kill until about noon.

Depends on what else you're into but I mostly avoid Midtown Comics. Forbidden Planet is okay, big manga section, lots of graphic novels, small indie/self-published section. They do have lots of those big ass Artist Edition books though, those are fun to look through.
Haven't been to JHU in forever but I remember thinking that was decent.
Human Relations used bookstore is rad, that's in Bushwick (Brooklyn). Google around, pretty much any used book store in the 5 boroughs is dope. The Strand is mostly new books now but it's massive and has a decent graphic novel section. Great selection of art books and monographs if that's your thing.

Troubled Sleep is a bookstore in Park Slope with a killer used comics and art book section, at least when I visited in the fall – found my Kramers 4 there

Not comics, but the Folk Art Museum is great and free (and in Manhattan): folkartmuseum.org/I heard good things about the Aeon bookstore but every time I'm around it's closed: aeonbookstore.com/

Thanks! Desert Island is my top priority. Probably gonna get off the train and try and go right there. Been dying to shop there and want to see if any of my comics I sent them have sold/restock in-person with some new stuff.

Folk Art Museum is so good, def worth a trip.
Aeon books is a really cool spot to browse stuff, but I've never actually bought anything there.

Why do you avoid Midtown Comics if I may ask? I prefer Dessert Island, The Strand, and the many small and used bookshops around NYC for my comics fix, but I recall Midtown having a decent indie comics selection.

I go to the Midtown near Grand Central a lot because I know I won't run into anyone and it's usually empty so it's like a restful meditation spot on the city.
Bookoff on 45th between 6th and 5th is a cool place to find basically any vertigo/dark horse graphic novel from the 90s for $10

No disrespect to anyone who goes there, I just mean it has a feel I don't like. It feels more like a Spencer Gifts than a book store to me. All the posters and stuff, I dunno. The Funkopop toys. I have the same problem with a lot of art supply stores, they make me feel like I'm shopping for a kid's birthday party haha.
