I'm considering making newsprint versions of my comic book issues which could be sold at a cheaper price ($1-$3) than the regular versions with high-quality matte finishing (which I currently sell at $8). Are the production costs for newsprint significantly cheaper enough to justify that?

Are you going to be printing yourself or looking for a place (or do you already have a place) that can do newsprint?

Are you going to be printing yourself or looking for a place (or do you already have a place) that can do newsprint? I'm somewhere between searching and already having a place. On sites like Mixam, choosing to print in US Standard Size is pricey regardless of what corners I cut. However, Digest Size is a relatively affordable option, so I am considering going that route.

Mixam doesn't offer newsprint as far as I know. and other places like RA Direct claim to offer it, but it's not real newsprint.

Printing on newsprint instead of a standard paper stock is not going to significantly lower your production costs by itself. When you see cheap comics on newsprint, they're cheap because because they are offset printed at a volume where the unit cost becomes incredibly low-- like 1000 copies and up.
