I was in need of some straightforward comfort tonight, so I alternated between Kirby issues of FF, the hardcover Street Angel albums and runs of Peanuts strips from the '50s. Did the trick!

Actual books: In Love by Alfred Hayes: has period trappings of a noir detective novel, but the mystery is a relationship. To say it has a similar plot to Indecent Proposal is to severely undersell it. It gets really gripping by the end. Vernon Subutex 1-3 by Virginie Despentes: Follows a record clerk who is evicted, becomes homeless, and inadvertently becomes a DJ. There's another plot involving a Weinstein type producer, but the book's main strength is the large cast of unusual characters. There's a lot of slang which I imagine reads better in French. There's a BD version drawn by Luz that looks to have imaginative layouts, but I haven't seen it. I liked her non-fiction book King Kong Theory better.
Comics: Just finished third book of Showa: A History of Japan, and I'm kicking myself for not reading this 4-volume series sooner as it is easily the best stuff I've read by Mizuki and seems like a classic. It alternates chapters of military/political history with chapters of autobiography. He mostly depicts himself as hapless and lazy, and this brings a lot of humor to some dire subject matter. One of those rare autobiographical comics where the life experience is consequential, and the drawings of him with malaria and losing an arm are very powerful. The history chapters have exciting battles and offer an entirely different viewpoint of WWII as seen from the other side. Volume 4 looks like it will show him taking up cartooning, so I'm looking forward to that.

I picked up Asadora by Naoki Urasawa volumes 2 & 3 and last night I re-read volume 1. Stoked to dive into 2 & 3 later today. The final page of volume 1 is a great cliffhanger.

That picture was bigger than I thought it would be lol. I am working through the Disney Masters volumes slowly but surely. I just read part 2 of the Ice Sword Saga, which was really good. I was unfamiliar with Massimo Da Vita until now, he's great.
Also started rereading some old Legion of Superheroes. Superman/ Superboy comics are total comfort food for me, don't care how old or bad they are.

Finally got the chance to crack open "Goodnight, Hem." Really enjoying it so far. Classic Jason but feels kind of slowed down and a bit more contemplative.

I've been reading Generous Bosom by Conor Stechschulte. I've read 1 & 2 today. It's so good. Can't believe I slept on it. But happy I can read it all this week. Excited to dig into 3 & 4 now.

Been digging into the various Lansdale/Truman Jonah Hex comics that Vertigo put out in the 90s.
Not exactly high literature but like a lot of things Truman has worked on, they're excellent by way of being unbelievably fucking weird

I just got my copy of Santos Sisters, and oh my god. Haven't even read it, but pulling it out of the bag, it feels so much like a comic. Glossy cover, four color printing on newsprint... But it's brand new. Not a yellowed bit of yesteryear. It just felt so good to hold it in my hands. This was me: It's just such a nice product. If they can print that affordably as an indie maker, what excuse do the major companies have for not putting out something in that format?

In the feathry society forum the editor of the series said that they are working on a Marco Rota volume and that has me extremely excited. In terms of actual reading today, I finished reading 'The Eternaut'. The book was amazing throughout though the last 5 pages or so, were kind of cliched in my opinion. But considering this was written in the 50s I guess that was expected. Would love to hear you all's thoughts on the book?

Currently reading 'Road to Nowhere' by Ding Pao-yen. Neither Volume 1 nor 2 have ben translated into English yet and am under the impression that they're only available in French outside of Taiwan. Highly recommend for fans of Chihoi, if that's of interest to anybody here.

Not exactly high literature but like a lot of things Truman has worked on, they're excellent by way of being unbelievably fucking weird I just did a reread of those a couple years ago. I love Westerns in general, and then when it's tweaked with horror and scifi elements, *chef's kiss*, that's the stuff.

I've decided to reread the Caricature collection but I'm only going to read one story in a day to try and appreciate them individually a little more. Caricature was the first one and it was great
I also read the first four issues of Martin/Brubaker's Friday and its.. okay. Really decompressed and not a lot happens. Martin and the colourist do an amazing job but it feels like a comic that will only be worth reading once 400 pages are finished.
In an unfair comparison, I also read MÅ“bius' The Long Tomorrow collection (a pdf of one of those Marvel epic issues. The fourth one I think?). Has The Long Tomorrow as well as a bunch of other short stories. The Long Tomorrow in particular was amazing, its like 18 pages and so much happens in it. Makes Friday look bad lol. The other stories are similar but are more ethereal writing-wise, which I also liked.

I've been reading Joakim Drescher's Miserable Mildred. I've read and liked Motel Universe 1 and 2, but Mildred is just so good.

At some point I picked up Ivan Brunetti's Graphic Fiction anthologies, but I don't think I ever actually did anything more than skim them. I started from the beginning of volume one yesterday and have been enjoying it quite a bit!
