The catch all thread for The Hernandez brothers.
Blubber #6, total masterpiece. I was laughing out loud constantly.
Queen of the Ring, man what an incredible book. I couldn't stop looking at these figures. So captivating. That book was even better than I imagined it would be. Jaime can just draw people standing and it's just perfect.

Queen of the Ring 11/10. I was also blown away to see all those action scenes were draw with like...no references?!! just the memory of the fights on tv and some magazines. Absolutely the goat. I wish I knew more about Jaime favorites movies and directors.
Ps: and the fact that all those illustrations were made for shits and giggles

Big time Los Bros reader since I was 15. I kinda miss the digest format they were doing, getting that big a hunk of Jaime at once over those years was so satisfying. Browntown fucked me up so hard.

I read Blubber #1-5 digitally earlier this year and thought it was pretty great. There's a collected book coming out later this year as well? Does it collect #1-6 or is Beto planning on continuing the series?
I finished reading Three Sisters and Angels & Magpies last month, so I've reached the end of the omnibus books. Hoping to get Tonta and Maria M. next

Don't really want to derail a discussion of their work with personal life stuff but it recently threw me for a loop that Jaime's in a relationship with Katie Skelly. The realization hit me upside the head and I don't know anyone outside of a forum like this that would know who they both are or care.

I've been looking over the hernandez bros' work on the first few issues of Mister X again, and man, they feel like totally perfect comic packages. beautiful line work, great colors, and the design work by dean motter and painted covers by paul rivoche just elevate each book to a whole new level. i'm always surprised by how little i see people talking about this era in their bibliography

Does the "Archives" book collect the Hernandez stuff? Is it the only collection?

I think the first "Locas" omnibus collection ("Locas: The Maggie and Hopey Stories") is the perfect place to start with the genius work of Jaime Hernandez.

I’ve read all the collected Luba / Palomar so far The Girl From H.O.P.P.E.R.S. was the best place for me to start. I read a couple stories from the earlier volume that didn't hook me, so I skipped ahead and very quickly loved it. Now I've gone back and read the Maggie the Mechanic stories and it's cool to see the origins of the characters, and the stories do get very strong, but I didn't have any fundamental misunderstandings about the characters or anything. Now you're reminding me that I need to get back into Beto's stuff!

There's also an issue in there by the late great Klaus Schoenfeld, and some super early work by Seth.

Seems super expensive & OOP, but I might find one or just get it digitally

where should i start to get into Jaime’s work? i’ve only recently ventured into the L&R universe and Beto resonated w me more immediately. I’ve read all the collected Luba / Palomar so far I felt the same way about Gilbert's work. That stuff immediately interested me, Jaime's work took a little longer. I started from the beginning and pushed through. His earlier stuff is good & has moments of brilliance but his writing just isn't quite there yet. You could just jump to the second collection, the bizzarely-named "Girl From H.O.P.P.E.R.S" (Hoppers is their town... why is it capitalised like that? has it ever been stylised like that in a book?), which is the second collection. The thing for me is that Jaime's work still doesn't really resonate with me when I first read it. I've never reread Gilbert's L&R (yet), but I've reread most of Jaime's because that stuff just feels better the second time around. idk, maybe thats just me
