I can't believe anyone on this board would even consider reading monthly mainstream comics at this point. I stopped reading them in 1987, and they've gotten progressively worse since then, without exception. Worse art, worse stories, worse production and paper and coloring, and of course are now so expensive (five bones for 22 pages of a continued story?) as to be the most wasteful and inefficient use of my "entertainment dollar" available. Fuck that.
Your money is better spent in the dollar boxes looking for runs of newsprint glories, like Miller's Daredevil, Moore's Swamp Thing, or Rude's Nexus, or single issue delights by Mike Golden, Tony Salmons, Art Adams, etc.
Modern mainstream comics are the worst they've ever been, raising mere edification to the level of religious propaganda, executed in a rote, robotic, computer enhanced manner not unlike the AI every half-bit arteest is up in arms about.

I always wanna support the normy shop in my neighborhood so I grabbed the first couple Batman Gargoyle comics, which is the first "big two" book I've bought in a long long time. The story is whatever but man the artwork is gorgeous. Rafael Grampa draws it all, does some really interesting things with his digital tools. Usually I can't stand the look of digital stuff but he's actually using it for specific effects, reversing the black outline to white to put details in neat places. All the action stuff rules, great sense of interior and exterior space, page layouts are exciting. If Frank Quitely was kidnapped by Al Columbia and force-fed Max Fleischer cartoons while drawing it would crank out something like this. Love your description of Grampá's art. I have only read the first issue and agree with you: the art is lovely, the story not quite there. Still worth it. Regarding wednesday habits, I tend to follow some of the names mentioned previously: Grampá, Brandon Graham, Stokoe, DWJ, Tradd Moore. I am also reading the current Conan book. It's pretty much a pastiche of the 70s comics, so even if they are hardly groundbreaking, they are decent comfort food.

Oh, I get it. But even in 1987 I knew 99% of the comics published then were grade-z junk, and spent most of my money on old Jack Kirby issues from the dollar bin. I don't see the same curiosity from today's readers. But to each his own.

Ugh, this guy. He's like a one-nut Moebius. One of those Frankie Santoros "fusion comics" guys, yuck.

Even when marvel has interesting artists like Peach Momoko the stories are still the same as they ever have been and just aren't interesting to me. As someone who worked in a comic book store for a good part of 2022 I was forced to read a lot of this stuff and its baffling how many people were buying the crap regularly. If the top creators of these dc and marvel books actually made something original I wonder how good it would be compared to the current alternative stuff that is coming out. How much longer do these shops have before people realize what they're reading is garbage? how do you change their minds?

I still enjoy his style, and his run in Prophet is still one of my favorite periodicals ever. Make of that what you will.

Prophet was hyped to the moon so I bought the first trade paperback, I remember it being just ok. Looked nice though

Accused of being a creep around trans women by multiple people. Dropped a "diss track comic" in response which was weirdly racist then quickly deleted. Threatens legal action on articles about the situation. Now buddies with like Eric Esquivel, who among other things, raped teenage girls. Honestly disappointed by how many people seem not to be aware or just don't care.

I didn't recall the diss track, and wasn't aware of this situation with Eric Esquivel... yeah, that doesn't look good at all.

Honestly disappointed by how many people seem not to be aware or just don't care. Doesn't mean he's not a jerk and probably caused people real pain, but being 'creepy', writing a diss track and threatening legal action is not the same as a sexual predator, which I also saw mentioned on this thread and at the time he was cancelled. I still think his case is odd because to equate his behavior as described with that of a predator seems very wrong, but then everyone alludes to actual instances of predation that he did commit...but when people ask what it was, the details often go back to the 'diss track.' There must be some action that I'm missing.

I hate even admitting that I remember this much about it but I don't believe Graham was ever necessarily pegged as a predator due to any specific acts, but as an editor and arbiter of taste who could kill deals for trans artists he might otherwise promote because he was or is, as was said, a "chaser." Whether or not he really pulled anyone's opportunities I don't know. I did hear that he threatened legal action against most of the people levying these kinds of accusations, so most have disappeared off the internet
