Whats everyones favorite Tezuka books? I know Pheonix is on everyone's want list, but what else should I be reading? I've read some but it's been a while. I was looking at nextworld and the drawings seem pretty cool!

I love Swallowing the Earth, Barbara and Book of Human Insects the most, and I find these to be his most wildly edgy and "out of character" books, but they're also all wildly problematic by modern standards.
Barbara IMO is the real creeper classic- a narrative commentary on his own artistic burnout and disillusionment from the tail end of his major gekiga period. Very unsavory stuff!

I echo junkflower, I think the "gritty" adult-orientated stuff that Vertical put out is the most interesting to read - stuff like Black Jack and Astro Boy are definitely aimed at younger audiences and I find don't reward reading in bulk. Buddha also I enjoy, I think it works best when he's exploring the lives of invented characters rather than the historical ones, but it's probably the longest of all his narratives you can easily find in English.

Ode To Kirihito is a good one for a new reader I'd think. I really find something in nearly all of it, he's incredible humbling to read.

Dororo is great. More in the astro boy, black jack category of being sort of for children, but like those, its very strange and disturbing. Great monsters, great environments. I got the big omnibus collection, but I think I'd rather have it in the three volumes it came out in.

My local library also has the Black Jack and Astro Boy collections and used to have Phoenix but it's out of circulation now; shoulda stole it when I had the chance, ha ha. Internet Archive has some stuff but it's hard to navigate.

If you're looking for just a done-in-one collection, I'd go with Ode to Kirihito. Message to Adolf is great and only 2 volumes ... that's the series that got me hooked on Tezuka. I'd also strongly recommend Buddha but that's more of a time/money investment.
