RIP. I read binky brown for the first time in March, imo it lived up to expectations. Goes through so much in 40 pages, really impressive work.

its dense but readable, its lucid, its surreal, its highly thoughtful, emotional, intelligent, compassionate, strained, impactful.... it resonates with me more than any other comic book i can think of... it is one of those books you want to give to all of your friends... i think that labeling it as the first auto bio book (even though its attempting to put it on a pedestal) does it a disservice... its more than that, it approaches great literature, blurring the lines from reality and fiction, realism and surrealism.... it is the human experience, but also justins experience, it is an exultation and understanding of suffering, pain , liberation of the mind and body.... it actually does what so many undergrounds fail to do in a style that is perfect for what it unknowingly set out to achieve - that is, actually subvert modes of perceiving reality and challenge the way that we process our emotion and produce works of art.... it sets a standard and destroys all that came before it, unwillingly! its also so small but does more for me then most novels, highlighting the use of the comic book medium in the best possible way of using images in a way that words simply cannot get to...

thanks for the links.
He was really a great artist. I just happened to be reading Carol Tyler's Late Bloomer these days so of course he comes up in some of the stories. They both were/are so gifted at comics, very treasured comics for me. And Binky Brown is just beyond wild. Also I agree that calling it the first autobio does it a disservice cause you box it and get certain prejudgments about it (or certainly I got them) which doesn't help at all to appreciate it for what it is. First time I read it many years ago I was so certain of I was gonna get from it (based on those boxed descriptions) that I somehow couldn't finish reading it. Later on I came back to it with a more open mind and then it just blew me away.

I'm excited by the documentary on Tyler and Green mentioned in the TCJ obit, since I love both of their work. They both seem to have thought carefully about what they wanted from a life of making art and worked to get there.
Any recommendations for Green work beyond Binky Brown that is particularly good and/or possible to track down?

There is an interview to Justin Green in TCJ now, from their archives, if anyone else is interested: www.tcj.com/on-comics-and-catholics-the-justin-green-interview/Any recommendations for Green work beyond Binky Brown that is particularly good and/or possible to track down? I haven't read anything more than Binky Brown and his stories in anthologies, but I've seen there are now some of his comic books at Domino.

Wish I saw this thread when it was made. Justin's family organized a show for him here in Cincinnati, tons of original art was on display along with a life's worth of letters. Many of which were cartoonists sharing leads with Justin for freelance gigs. There was one letter from a pre-Simpsons Matt Groening insisting he did not steal the name Binky from Justin. Carol Tyler lead tours of the show and lead several events. I met Art Spiegelman at an event there the other day, kind of wild. Website for his daughter's gallery is here: www.dsgncllctv.com/justingreen
