Anyone else read Floating World’s new release of Boat Life, Vol. 1 by Tsuge Tadao? It was a fun read and really interesting to see how he mellowed out over the years as compared to his early work. It explores the same sort of mindset that fuels Tsuge Yoshiharu’s The Man Without Talent, that of the middle-aged Japanese man’s urge to disappear from society. One thing that sets this apart from his brother’s work is this feeling in Boat Life that the characters just can’t escape from the Post War Period that so defines Tadao’s early manga.
Ryan Holmberg’s supplementary essay helps to contextualize the real life situations that inspire this work as well as the ways the brothers Tsuge have influenced each other over the years. It was also pretty cool to read about fishing manga as a genre, something I know nothing about. There are also two essays by Tsuge Tadao, the longer being a really interesting history of his struggles as a professional cartoonist and his fishing as an escape from life’s mundane realities.

Aright I got to crack my copy open this week! I'm not always the biggest Tadao fan, but now I'm very curious about this one.

Aright I got to crack my copy open this week! I'm not always the biggest Tadao fan, but now I'm very curious about this one. Looking forward to hearing what you think about it! It’s by far his most conventional cartooning and lighthearted material, so it might work for you in ways his others haven’t. I hate to keep bringing up his brother, but this reminds me more of Yoshiharu’s fishing and travel stories than it does Tadao’s Garo stuff.

I read the spanish edition of this book a few years ago ( a copy from the library). I don't know why Tadao is so undervalued, I always think he has great stories, but this book is especially good. Been waiting for the english edition to come out to grab a copy cause I like Holmberg's essays so much. So now I am a bit annoyed this comes in 2 volumes, i am a bit impatient i guess...
