If people also want to talk about the process of applying for residencies, etc. then go for it but I have a slightly different question for folks who have done anything like this -- how do you organize your time when you're there?? What stages or types of projects lend themselves well to an isolated, focused period of work? How do you prepare? I've occasionally take a day or two off work for comics, and usually run out of steam before my grand plans for Getting Things Done come fully to fruition. Maybe it's as simple as turning off my stupid phone. I know a few people who have done fake residencies, i.e. renting an Airbnb for a few days, and that appeals to me as well...

Only done Angoulême, and made the mistake of going there with the expectation of “figuring it out” on the spot. Ended up with an okayish 4 page comic, threw away everything else. Don’t do that… 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ Would do it again, but not in summer (it can get extremely hot, no AC anywhere), and with an actual planned out project. Kus have a residency in Latvia, they are lovely people.

In the last few years I have been applying for grants and using the funding for travel, lodging and workshops. Sometimes I'll do a "research trip" such as go visit an archive or historic site and then work from my hotel. Having to submit a final grant report is good motivation for me to get projects done. Also National Parks have a residency program, which I want to apply to in the future. Usually they are cheap/free if you donate an artwork or hold a workshop. Staying in a cabin, hiking and drawing seems amazing. www.nps.gov/subjects/arts/air.htm

it may be a bit far fetched posting this here but... this is a comics residency in Helsinki (Finland) for comic artists living in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. I may be wrong, but I don't think anybody actively posting in the forum lives in that region but maybe you know a friend who meets this requirement? or someone else reading the forum could benefit from this? sarjakuvakeskus.fi/uncategorized/cune-comics-in-residence-programme-2023/The residency apartment (annexed to an atelier) is actually in an island (Suomenlinna) just 15 minutes by ferry from downtown Helsinki. it is a very beautiful place.
Edit: the deadline is be a bit too soon, as it is June 11th 2023 (sorry just found out about this year's call!) but the CUNE residency anyway happens every year.
