I think independent short animation is having a bit of a moment right now--here are some of my favorites, new and old:

Wow that's some good stuff, I'd recommend anything by Jonathan Djob Nkondo (none of his comics come close to the joy of his animation), and Puparia (unreal 3 minute animation that took 3 years to make, hand painted and made by just one guy)

Evan Wolff of the band Vacation has done some cool animations for music videos and promo stuff, mostly for Vacation but for other bands as well. He used to do comics too but now he mostly does illustrations and collage-work. youtu.be/xOeDwmniw18?si=SPPjWQfQW6yhR14I

I'm old, but two all-time favorites:

jporcellino both are classics! I think the latter is on criterion channel, there are a few good animated things there. All of von Barh's films are, too, she's another great stop-motion artist, every one is like a perfect short comic. She and the people who did This Magnificent Cake have segments in the House on Netflix, but their personal work is much darker and more interesting, I think. A couple other things I remembered: And bonus cartoonist-related content:

Asparagus is one of the most perfect things I've ever seen. Mind-melting!

Asparagus is one of the most perfect things I've ever seen. Mind-melting! i feel like i'm still basing my colour palette off of asparagus 4-5 years after first watching it. so good.

This one is on criterion channel rn--highly recommended. The premise sounds as generic as it gets, but they subvert all the tropes without making a song and dance about it (just a song). Eccentric, funny and heartfelt, and very restrained--at times felt like a Nick Maandag story almost. Also, a rare example of rotoscoping done in an interesting way, and it fits with the DIY message in the story.

View AttachmentView AttachmentAlaird, I am a big fan of what you did with Hellavision and seeing your regular showcases! I hope to catch one next time I'm back in NYC. I am also self-plugging here, but I put on a show in LA called Loose Frames every other month which focuses on individual indie animators and their process. If you're in town, check out our IG: @loose_frames

There's a French animation fest happening in NY right now, actually, bit of a mixed bag, it seems, but I got tickets for Sirocco on Friday, looks cute, and for Best of Annecy WTF (experimental stuff) for Saturday: fiaf.org/animation-first-2024/
