i dont know but Random Man prints so few copies, and the books look good, so...I'll take it? The Portrait Mode book they did with Ben Mendelewicz is super expensive but it's one of the best printed art zines I've ever seen. I hate expensively priced items, but whatever is helping Random Man keep the lights on is ok, I think.

Lots of great stuff, but the real stand-out for me was I Wish I Was Stupid. Didn't expect it to be *that* much better, weirder and funnier than the first volume, and there's a kind of melancholy that elevates all the madness. But more than anything, his whole approach to cartooning is so liberating and inspiring, and I loved that essay about him laughing at his father's funeral. Surprised to have been so moved by Ebisu, but there you have it!

Swag 6 by Arthur Necrophilic Landscape counts as a 2023 book? That would be on my list, although Nightcore Energy was one of the best things I read all year.

Yeah, Necrophilic Landscape is definitely not a 2023 book. I don't know how limited the print run was, but it came out in 2017 and I was able to get a copy from the publisher in 2020. Nigbtcore Energy was more of a "blink and you'll miss it" affair in its 2019 edition before Organ Bank's 2022 reprint. I hate being pedantic and normally I would take a "put whatever you want on your list" approach where if you hadn't read it before it's new to you but I also know these are all comics Austin has read before.
Organ Bank reprinted The Plot Against The Giant this year, and not a lot of people read that one before, but I think it's a pretty minor work compared to the comics in question.
Still hoping the library comes through with copies of Nejishiki, My Picture Diary, and Why Don't You Love Me before the end of the year, but I have my list pretty well decided.

There is no way I could've read W The Whore Throws The Glove or the stuff in Nejishiki before. Necrophilic Landscape was reprinted this year, with a small amount of ancillary material, but that happens all the time. I don't see how this edition is any more proper than the one that existed already, it has a spine and an ISBN number and is printed a little bit better but if you're making a list of books that came out this year I don't see why it would qualify but like The Death-Ray (which also got a paperback edition this year) wouldn't. If you're reading these comics for the first time I'm happy for you - I also read comics for the first time this year that came out in previous years, many of which I wish were editioned in new books - but new printings of books that were available fairly recently doesn't really seem notable to me within the context of a year-end retrospective. I absolutely encourage reading older books, and would love to hear more about what are the best older books people read for the first time this year.

I actually kept track of the comics I read this year! For some reason I'm very diligent about doing this with prose but usually not with comics. I think my picks would be: * Now Is The Time To Know Everything, Simon Moreton - maybe only marginally a comic, or a prose book with illustrations, but I really loved it. Here's an excerpt. * What Awaits Them * Crooked Teeth 9 / Blammo 10.5 / King Cat 82 - contrarian choices, especially after I see that King Cat actually came out in Dec 2022, but also because I don't think any of these are really stand out issues of the respective series. Not the issue I'd recommend for someone new to these cartoonists. But they're representative issues, all very good, and I happened to read these in quick succession so I thought about the pleasure of reading someone's comic for many years, this little window into their life and their work as both change. * Kevin H 2023 output (Fielder 2, Nonprose, monthly Patreon e-zines) * Blood of the Virgin * The Buildings Are Barking * Stories from Zoo - I happened to read this right after another comic that's very text-driven but with weak prose. I was for that reason especially struck by the prose in Zoo which I thought was very strong by comics standards and strong even by prose standards. The choices, maybe I'd call them absurdist, in many of the strips here felt idiosyncratic and personal in a compelling way -- whether that choice is central to the story, like the guy in the fridge, or a marginal detail like the story where one character and his family have a weird hairstyle. These elements are never over-explained or feel tortured as metaphors even when they do in part serve that purpose. I enjoyed Brian's TCJ review but I liked the art more than him -- I felt it was energetic and unusual more often than it was sloppy and crude. * Les Guerres Immobiles, Fabrice Neaud
