It's getting to year-end listmaking time - a list from Powell's I saw yesterday of fifteen books included seven I'd never heard of, a Washington Post list that came out today had three books that were on the Powell's list I was able to see before I got hit with a paywall. What were your favorite books/zines/series/etc of the year, the stuff you think should be remembered came out before anyone makes a year end list?
Monica by Dan Clowes is obviously the frontrunner for original graphic novels, though Sammy Harkham's Blood Of The Virgin is top of the line for previously serialized work. I would shout out Kyoko Okazaki's River's Edge, Minami's Lover (by an artist whose name I forget), Tiger Tateishi's Cheat Sheets, and Yoshikazu Ebisu's I Wish I Was Stupid for single-volume manga reprints, although I am of course lost as to longer manga serials that came out this year, besides the Kazuo Umezz Cat-Eyed Boy hardcovers. Liam Cobb's What Awaits Them is a cool book.
Self-published series that published an issue or two this year: Fielder 2 from Kevin Huizenga, Evan Salazar's Rodeo 3, Carlos Gonzalez' Everglide 5, Max Huffman's Hypermutt 5-7, Alex Graham's Devil's Grin 3&4, Molly O'Connell's Pebbles 1&2, Nathan Cowdry's War Epic 1&2, Daria Tessler's Cagelessness 2, Mike Centeno's Futile 9. Noel Freibert reprinted issue 6 of CF's Lowtide. I'm waiting on the book collection of Olivier Schrauwen's Sunday but seemingly no one else who posts on here is, the last chunk of that came out recently.
Fave short stories - The Plunge by Nick Mandaag, Allee Errico's story about Herpes in Cram 2.
Anyway I am just trying to get the ball rolling and not name all my favorite stuff. What did you like this year?

Lol I'm looking back at my posts on the "What Are You Reading" thread and realizing pretty much nothing I've read has come out this year. My copies of Fielder and Buildings Are Barking are in the mail tho!

I think we had a great year. I had to look up that powell's list because I was curious. So interesting how many books on here never crossed my radar. Anyways let me shout out some stuff real quick: Orochi by Umezz, Low Tide #6 (reissue) by CF (and all the minis he's made), Minami’s Lover by Shungiku Uchida, Nathan Cowdry’s War Epic, Donkey by Joe Kessler, The Complete Jontar by Bill Miller, Three Rocks by Bill Griffith, Quel Qu’un/Blah Blah Blah #4 by Juliette Collet, My Picture Diary by Fujiwara Maki, Nejishiki by Yoshiharu Tsuge, Mimi's Tales of Terror by Junji Ito, Telemarketing Guys by Abraham Diaz, Wonder House of Horrors by Miyako Cojima, Poison Pill anthology, Upstate #3 by Stephen Pellnat, Cagelessness Volume 2 by Daria Tessler, Sunday 5,6,7 by Olivier Schrauwen... probably more.

Neoglyphic Landscape by Morgan Vogel (reprint of a previously published work, but first time in bookform)
W The Whore by Feuchtnberger and De Vries
Flow Form Speciman by Westvind
Unended by Josh Bayer (this might be my favorite book of the year)
Sundays 5, 6, 7 by Schrauwen. In some ways this work might not be my taste exactly but it's someone working at such a high level, it doesn't really matter if it's 'your kinda thing'
Monica by Clowes
Nejinski by Tsuge
Wish I Was Stupid by Ebisu
Blah Blah Blah 4 by Collet
Psychodrama Illustrated #6 by Hernandez
Fielder 2 by Huizenga
still need to read a ton of stuff (tales from the park, proof that the devil loves you...). Wish Allee Errico's book from Cram was out, I've seen bits of it and that'd be high on my list if it had been on schedule to be out by end of December.
I didn't edit all of it, but I was pretty involved so I can't nominate it but I'm very proud of Jaywalk 4, getting sent out later this month...

Sunday - nothing came anywhere near this in 2023 for me. number 1 by an enormous margin. River Rangers - haven't seen many people talking about this but i think it's tremendous. just beautiful cartooning, funny, weird, charming, it's got it all. hhbm.bigcartel.com/Tsuge Nejishiki - i thought these stories were cool but the essay is really where the meat is in this book for me. also Everglide, Cram 2, Stories from Zoo, Moonray, Unended, i'm sure i'm forgetting some.

I'm realising I didn't read much of anything released this year, mostly 2022 catch up and older books. With that said I'd like to shout out Patrick Kyle's Baby, it's one of his best but has unfortunately flown under the radar a little bit. Him and Schrauwen are the funniest cartoonists working today IMO, it's insane that he can just make this stuff off the dome.

Where are people finding the Ebisu? It’s sold out at my usual places.

As usual I'll be collecting lists for Bubbles in January 2024 and publishing them in March-ish when nobody cares at the moment anymore, but it'll age well for years down the road lol
