Wouldja believe that good old Ernie Bushmiller took figure drawing classes alongside Cadmus? (Learned that from the Griffith last year.) Damn thats awesome. Was that at the Art Students League? At the National Academy of Design in the UES in NY. Would've been in the early 20s!

to pick up on anti-stylers. I sort of hate this term I think it's a plot by old heads to ghettoize newer graffiti styles as "young people shit" but a few people I can think of who do this are aneko, sluto, and our own resident comic wonder-kin Mr.Tangemanga himself. although I don't think any of them would like that label being put on them either. there's a great instagram that catalogs a lot of the eastern euro stuff, pretty sure it's just called antistyle or something like that. Woah. Is Tangeman in BKF?

Feels pretty obvious to say that the work of peter saul is extremely inspired by comic books. my favorite of his work is his really early "icebox paintings" I think in his mid career work he gets really noodly with his modeling and it gives everything a sort of plastic like finish that i'm not a huge fan of but its great nonetheless. that being said his painting of george washington crossing the delaware and that painting with the subway crash have to be some of the most arresting prices of art I've ever seen with my own eyes. but due to their immense scale they really feel best in person or in books. in his later work he's gotten so wrapped up in his own visual language that he's done a sorta horseshoe transformation, taking a lot of the abstract imagery from those early icebox painting and translating it into new visual imagery with a nice progression of his modeling which has become more splotchy and clay like in a way I really love.

And here's Ed Pi$kor looking stupider than ever on his co-splay funnybike from before he was born. Everything this guy does makes him more and more of a buffoon, Jesus. From Nathan Barley: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhAr_UeroCk

Just wanna point out how amazing this Panter accordion is that wig shop is selling. Panter's obsession with dinosaurs is my favorite thing in contemporary art. i'd be interested to know if it is one continuous piece or a few chopped up.

A shame that this is out of stock because while I normally hate pricey books, for Feininger this is the best way to get into his stuff www.fantagraphics.com/products/forgotten-fantasy-sunday-comics-1900-1915Even the cheap softcover that Fanta did years ago is OOP and price prohibitive. My big comics theory is that Feininger suggested a vibrant path that comics could have chosen which was largely tossed aside for a Caniff approach. this book is absolutely an amazing thing to see. if you live in san fransisco, I would recommend seeing it at your public library. just the feininger strips alone make this book necessary of some sort of pilgrimage. or if you are the alumni of these schools. some of these schools might have open viewing. should really be in NYPL too. search.worldcat.org/title/746347407Attachments:
