Viz just announced a new Taiyo Matsumoto thing, called Tokyo These Days, "told from the perspective of a disgraced manga editor" per Twitter, is coming out in Spring 2024. They'll also be releasing Kazuo Umezz's My Name Is Shingo in Perfect Editions at that time too. I can't tell if this tweet of great-looking 1980s Umezz stuff counts as a preview, but that comic did run from 1981-1985: twitter.com/comicsblogger/status/1660794745449332737
Also Kevin Huizenga's got a new issue of Fielder on the way. I believe it's self-published, but being listed through Drawn And Quarterly for distribution through Diamond? Due in September. In October, Brandon Graham's got a new book coming out in hardcover from Living The Line, a very weird publisher to my mind. 160 pages, $35, developed in parallel to a video game, and featuring both stuff Graham draws and another story set in the same world drawn by Xurxo Penalta. It's called Moonray: Book One.

I'm really disappointed in LTL for publishing Graham, tbh

I'm really disappointed in LTL for publishing Graham, tbh I am definitely curious how people are going to respond to this. Personally I'm a huge fan of his work, and have been impressed with his openness with discussing the shitty things he's done in the past. But it is I guess kind of weird that a lot of this discussion happens in his sketchbook posts and on his Patreon which are not exactly out in the open.
I'm not a fan of writing anyone off or cancelling/blacklisting them forever, but I'm also not part of a demographic that was harmed by his words/actions so I'm interested to hear more takes on this.

Yeah I don't really want to get into a big back-and-forth about this here, because I respect that Bubbles is a place for positivity, but I do want to say: If the goal of "cancelation" is to protect the community, and Brandon acted shitty to people at shows (at afterparties or whatever), isn't Living The Line a good publisher for him to end up with? A publisher, by nature, is a buffer between an artist and their audience. If it was Brandon being in a position of power (as an anthology editor at Image, he would've had a good deal of industry clout, which would then attract people he could exploit), doesn't being a part of a publishing stable where - It's Dave Sim, who doesn't do shows anymore to the best of my knowledge, Yuichi Yokoyama, who lives in Japan, and a comic written by Carson that's drawn by Midjourney, which doesn't have a physical body - the creators are not required or expected to meet their public as part of the selling process, as opposed to self-publishing, or being at Image. They exist at a sufficient distance from that community, essentially.
My big issue with 2DCloud trying to rebrand as "we apologize for canceling our artists" is because that's a publisher which, a) actively recruits emerging young female artists, and b) then has those artists selling their wares alongside their more established peers who already have books out, effectively putting those accused of sexual impropriety into a place where they have privilege and authority.

Breakdown have teased a Liam Cobb short story + zine collection on insta called "What Awaits Them" (I think), something like Seasonal Shift probably, which I'm looking forward to since a lot of his zines are out of print and I'm fascinated by Anglosphere cartoonists doing Ligne-claire stuff. With Cobbs stuff, John's Worth and Generous Bosom being collected I'm now pretty confident a Treasure Island collection will follow.

There's a comics tribute from Bill Griffith to his wife Diane Noomin coming out soon. I had no idea of this comic up till now, this is Fantagraphic's announcement: "The Buildings are Barking is Bill Griffith’s tender, poetic, deeply felt comics tribute to his wife, life-long partner, muse, copy editor, and fellow cartoonist Diane Noomin, out 7/19."

Bill Griffith also has Three Rocks coming out at the end of August. I hope that book does well so someone can reprint classic Nancy again

I've been negligent in my forum posting the past few weeks, so I want to bump this and say -- it's a big deal!! I'm really looking forward to it! It's very interesting that neither is the book called Journal 5 nor is Journal mentioned anywhere on the cover. Neaud's choice? In part a marketing ploy to draw in new readers? If the latter, maybe we'll finally finally get some Neaud in English? I've always felt that one reason why Journal Vols. 2 and 4 are much weaker than 1 and 3 (though still very good!) is that they're too focused on the reception and discussion around the preceding volume. Probably as much a reflection of the fact that the discussion was a significant part of Neaud's life (both Vol. 1 and 3 were very well-received, 3 in particular was the subject of quite vigorous critical discussion) as it was a conscious artistic choice. Anyways, by that logic this volume should be great!

It was Neaud's choice. This will be in the mode of volumes 1 and 3, at least in subject matter - it's concerned with the faceless lover in "Emile" in Ego Comme X 7, who Fabrice reconnected with after many years, and gave his consent to make the book possible.
