Hi all,
I've enjoyed CF's work but have been bewildered by most of it. There are a host of artists that I frequently enjoy but don't understand well, and I'm hoping others with a more refined comics literacy can offer some thoughts on why so many hold his work in such high regard.
And if CF is reading this: Disregard all of that, I love your work and understand it completely.

I've never read a CF comic but I cannot tell you how jealous I continue to be about his idea to print comic scrolls using a receipt printer. I wouldn't have the chops to do anything interesting with it, but still I wish I'd thought of it first.

I've only managed to get/read Purple Softkey or whatever it's called but I thought it was really original and very funny. I didn't think super hard about it but I did kind of get the feeling that maybe I was supposed to (?)

Power Mastrs when it first was out was just totally different than most other comics I read, I know what his influences are now but it really felt like something else circa 2010. I remember telling my comics professor in school I was into his work- he mentioned his full name was Chris Forgous and I was stunned that he had a real human name lol.
I will say though, going to the shows that were around in that era and seeing that CF would also make his weirdo music made it feel like it was part of a larger aesthetic universe I was stepping into. It was kinda exciting that a person making comics was also doing strange performance music, it felt very punk in a way that didn’t seem cheesy.

I think this is a pretty normal reaction. Also a lot of his more readable work might be hard to track down. I definitely think William Softkey and the Purple Spider is a great one that shows his humor and style. My favorite book of last year.

Oh and that "Binoculars" story that was recently collected in that small blue book, pure genius.

I gotta be honest I couldn’t finish the Max and the Spider book. I think his art can be really interesting but I think his writing is pretty meandering and pointless. But I also need to read more of his stuff to form a full opinion.

I got a few of his scroll comics a while back. They feel like artifacts from some other timeline.

POWR MASTRS will always be close to my heart. he has like a... technical crudeness? that appeals to me. i don't like his stuff much in color though.

From what I’ve seen, it feels like CF’s point is often the lack there of. Stories end abruptly or intensify and build up then go off the walls in cryptic, coded, satiric ways. His work always looks incredible, more so because it seems so simplistic! Every time I look at his stuff I’m amazed at what he can pull off with so few lines. And it’s so often hilarious, usually in ways that are difficult to define. Anyways, “CF: What’s the deal” would make a great t-shirt.
