9:30am - 9:55am Mark Shubert presents: How Will He Use It? - The Editorial Cartoons of George H. Ben Johnson Join us as we talk about early 20th century Richmond artist George H. Ben Johnson and the impactful editorial cartoons he made for the Richmond Planet that confronted the injustices and violence of the Jim Crow south head on as well as teaching African history.
10:00am - 10:50am Ryan Holmberg Presents: Your Job is What?! A Year in the Life of a Mangologist Decorated manga historian, translator, editor, and agent Ryan Holmberg, a.k.a. @mangaberg, will explain how he manages to make a living doing what he does.
11:00am - 11:50am Jenny Zervakis interview by Brian Baynes A cartoonist from Durham, NC, Zervakis has been part of the underground zine scene since the early 1990s. She continues to make her poetically emotional comics today. We’ll talk about process and inspiration.
12:00pm - 12:50pm Dash Shaw interview by Brian Baynes Richmond local, Shaw is a cartoonist and animated film director. He’s preparing for the release for his new book Blurry (NYRC) out in the fall. We’ll discuss how this 480 tome came to be and what kind of stories he likes to tell.
1:00pm - 1:50pm Cartoons/ Lunch Break Get some lunch during this hour break, or hang out and relax while we play some old cartoon shorts from across the past 100 years. All the while be sure to take some time to shop at our vintage sellers tables.
2:00pm - 2:50pm Gabrielle Bell interviewed by comics scholar Francesca Lyn. Bell has been pushing the auto-bio/journal comics genre forward for over two decades. She’s published a dozen comics and continues to reach new depths in her thoughtful writing.
3:00pm - 3:50pm C.F. interviewed by cartoonist Noel Friebert. Christopher Forgues has been one of the leaders of experimental comics since the turn of the century. His comics are funny, thoughtful, dreamy and everything you might not expect from a comic.
MAY 4th SATURDAY 8:30pm (OSB, $10): After party in which C.F. will perform as Universal Cell Unlock at OSB (ask me for the address at Bubbles Con) Performing: - Universal Cell Unlock - Kyle Flanagan - Tim Gick - Tommy Birchett - Fracking - Molasses
