I was super into Kartalopoulos's talk on avant-garde comics. Does anyone have any recommendations for avant-garde, abstract, poetic, experimental....or just plain weird comics?

I wish it was someway affordable to ship this book to the UK, but this thing is not just a brick, but three bricks slipcased together.
Fantagraphics actually issued an anthology of abstract comics a decade or so ago ("Abstract Comics: The Anthology 1958-2008"), but it's long OOP and pretty hard to find - something to put on the ebay alerts at least!

Thank you all! I might try to get that Abstract Comics book through inter library loans. Domino books is fantastic! I'll have to pick up a few books from them.
Keep 'em coming folks!

Was going through some of my shoeboxes of minis and looked at a number of chapbooks I have from the Belgium publishing house FRMK that probably would fit the bill for what you're seeking- not sure how available they'd be if you are stateside but many of them have little/no text and this probably isn't key to the appreciation of the work anyway - especially Vincent Fortemps, the second of these pics, that stuff is pretty abstracted and sometimes there's only the suggestion of representation through the scratches:

I'm really looking forward to the new book by artist and Domino's instigator, Austin English, Meskin and Umezo. dominobooks.org/meskinandumezo.html. The maker just posted a peak on instagram.

I love that there's a thread for this. While I like all kinds of comics, I am particularly interested in...everything and anything that we think might fit in this thread. Here are a few things that I really love. A couple from the past year: Francis Bacon by E. A. Bethea. dominobooks.org/francisbacon.html It's a comic, it's a poem, it's fiction, it's a journal, it's special. Failure Biographies by Johnny Damm. www.theoperatingsystem.org/product/failure-biographies/ It's a collage re-mix of old comics but it's also an essay about art and artists and "failure". A classic: The Cage by Martin Vaughan-James chbooks.com/Books/T/The-Cage3 (from the 70s) Apparently there will be a NYRB edition bringing few other books by this artist next year back into print. Looking forward to that.

Teemcgee thanks for sharing FRMK! So many rad looking books. My partner and I are studying french so hopefully this is motivates me to take my studies more serious. Blaisemoritz big thanks too! How did I not know about Martin Vaugh-James!? I stumbled on a big archive of his work on ubu.com....but I would rather read them in print. Soooooo damn good.

Thanks once again for the Martin Vaugh-James recommendation. I recently got The Cage and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Also I recently read The Immersion Program by Leo Quievreux which I couldn't recommend enough. I hope more of his work is translated soon.

You hep to D.R.T.'s Qoberious Vol. 1? Self-published in '18. I'm hesitant to say too much about it, outside of my opinion that it's a beautiful, confounding and rewarding piece of work, but a few spots have written about him, so search away if you're curious. Somewhat surprised that copies aren't on hand at the Dominos and Wig Shops of the world, and the author's big cartel seems to be down at the moment, but I'd strongly encourage you to just try writing to him directly. Can't hurt to try! Only other place that I've seen his work was in Now #5, which might well be on your nightstand this very minute.
