Did anyone here read Proof That The Devil Loves You?
I know it's like a collage of older work or whatever, but ignoring that, as a book itself it stands to be one of the strangest comics I've ever read.

I LOVED it, I love that this is a late career work that is supremely unself concious. It's abstract but not arbitrary. I wish more legendary cartoonists were as concerned with expressing themselves first and less worried about how its gonna land given who they are. It's nuts that they made this a book though, should be a two issue mini series, cannot imagine someone picking this up after seeing the PBS doc.

I'll certainly be flipping through it in years to come. But it's uniquely strange. Beto definitely is only looking forward, not back. I love that about him.

"It's nuts that they made this a book" is my thought about the Blubber collection. Of course, I thought Proof That the Devil Loves You was great, and I'd recommend it to people that don't really dig late-career Beto. There's enough variety and the pieces don't over stay their welcome. And maybe just maybe people might come away with an appreciation of why Beto is so dedicated to Fritz. "Here's how I would boss around a kid...Gentle...Tender" Fritz is the best. Totally unrelated here's a picture Jaime did for the Alta Journal California Book Club when Maggie the Mechanic was the book of the month. It's answering "Why I Draw"
