Thanks Austin for organizing this. I love Anke Feuchtenberger's work, so this was a treat to watch.

I watched the other day Diana Schutz's talk at the NY Comics Symposium. I am ashamed to say I had no idea who she was before watching this. Also: I expected to watch this in several seatings since this is a a 3-hour long talk. But she was so engaging, and everything she explained was so interesting, I rescheduled for later some plans I had and watched it in one go! haha Most people in the forum know already about the Symposium, but anyway here it is the link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk0-irnfMcs

I'm glad you enjoyed it! She's responsible for so many good books on peoples shelves. I think the talk shows why she was a great editor: unlike so so so many people in comics who work the job she worked, she is a uniquely patient communicator, you could see in the talk that she took every idea seriously (attempting to not caricature or invert what was being said) and tried to approach it from all sides, but then eventually made a strong statement that wasn't vague...artists deserve more editors like that.
Her discussion of the painstaking work she did to give Lynn Varley space to improvise was really valuable, all the little things you can do as an editor/publisher that will make a project better if you take the role seriously and understand the space an artist needs, ensuring a structure where creativity can happen. So often, people in her position condescend to artists and it's rare to encounter an editor who has a vision of what they want but finds a way to not be a bully about it, to make the vision collaborative.

Ah, the 90s. I apologize on behalf of my generation, even though I had NOTHING to do with any of this.
