I just found Fritz Lang's first and last Hollywood comedy for free on youtube, You and Me (1938). Very atypical of Lang, and bares few if any of his stylistic hallmarks. It has a novel premise where a good-doer department store owner hires ex-cons to work the sales floor. Makes you wonder how much he's paying them. Apparently not much, as the cons quickly hatch a scheme to case the joint. George Raft and Sylvia Sidney (one of my favorite actresses of the thirties) are perfectly paired, and the film even features an early role from Robert Cummings. I've been scouring the internet forever to find this gem. Perhaps some of you here might be charmed by it too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVrv-bQoWEc

I'm watching the Scott Pilgrim cartoon while I wrap Christmas gifts. It's pretty good.

Watched Elliot Gould in "Little Murders" the other day. Jules Feiffer script adapted from his own stageplay. I'm pretty sure I've only ever read Tantrum by Feiffer but I admire his ability to take satirical concepts that seem sort of trite on paper (mid-life crisis transforms adult man into baby; New Yorkers all randomly sniping each other from their apartments) and really take them for all they're worth. Genuinely entertaining, ultimately kind of sad movie. Almost every vignette in the first act is composed like a gag strip.

I love Feiffer comic collections-- Boy, Girl, Boy, Girl and others. Favorite art by him is probably in "The Phantom Tollbooth".
Only read the play "Little Murders", never saw the movie. Seems like some things might not have aged well-- the son's character? But it's been a while and I might be remembering things wrong.
Feiffer's such a fantastic artist though-- the fluidest of fluid lines.
Sorry I am too stupid to use the Quote thing correctly. Good to know.

RIP, Glynis Johns. Watched "Miranda" (1948) where she plays a mermaid. Unfortunately, her magnificent tail is hidden under a blanket for most of the movie.
Nice scene at the zoo where she eats the seal's fish.
Don't remember her as Lady Penelope Peasoup in the old Batman TV series.
(My mother wanted to name me Glynis but dad vetoed this.)

I'm pretty sure I've only ever read Tantrum by Feiffer Have you seen popeye ?!?!!!! no been meaning to for a long time EDIT: I was thinking about Altman today cause I found out the guy who co-wrote most of "Desire" with Bob Dylan also directed a musical version of Doonesbury for Broadway. And basically flipping a coin in my head on whether or not Altman would've made a Doonesbury movie given the chance. Either way, glad he didn't lol Did NOT realize Feiffer wrote Popeye, OR Carnal Knowledge tbh, another movie I've been meaning to watch for quite some time.

The son character is played alright in the movie, mostly 'cause they don't put too much focus on him. I can see another version where his crossdressing or whatever is going on is not handled delicately lol. Feiffer really fucks around and still manages to find the most vivid way of conveying what he wants to. I don't know if this makes complete sense but flipping thru Tantrum really brings Josh Bayer to mind.
