My wife and I recently watched through Ryan Gosling's filmography due to him working with a variety of directors/genres. It was a lot of fun. We ranked everything and I think our choices are kinda controversial. Curious what you all think.
Half Nelson Lars and the Real Girl The Big Short First Man The Nice Guys Blue Valentine The Ides of March Crazy Stupid Love The Notebook Drive Remember the Titans Murder by Numbers La La Land All Good Things Fracture The Believer The Place Beyond the Pines The Gray Man Stay Blade Runner 2049 Barbie The United States of Leland Only God Forgives Gangster Squad Song to Song
He is in a surprising number of stinkers. I recommend the first five here and nothing else, lol.

an unexpected comics cameo, from rodrigo moreno's the delinquents. I just marked this to watch on Letterboxd. How was it? Seems interesting.
I thought it was great, one of the movies I enjoyed the most in a long time. I really admire how free the narrative manages to be while still being always grounded and sound. It starts being Rififi (ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit), then turns into Partie de campagne to then become it's own thing. Not sure how many heist movies pull off a long poetry reading right in the middle, but this one does and it's very effective.

I liked it a lot, somewhat more than Laura Citarella's Tranque Lauquen, the other very long Argentine movie that is getting attention this year, although that's an interesting movie too. I've seen it get described as a heist movie, which is pretty misleading - the heist takes up a very brief portion at the beginning of the movie, and the rest drifts along in the wake. I found it very funny and moving, and surprisingly harsh, and the central questions, about work, money and time, are interesting ones. Definitely a mileage may vary thing though, a lot of people whose tastes I usually share seem to find it kind of thin.

I havent seen all of his movies but i would put blade runner (which I am sorta meh on) and barbie higher as well. i also dont really like first man or the big short, so those are plummeting

The Big Short was so enjoyable for me, and no offense at all, but I think Song to Song was honestly one of the very worst movies I've ever seen. His performance in Barbie was great, but I disliked the movie overall, to be more clear. Happy to know that someone else was underwhelmed with Blade Runner. Everyone gets upset about me disliking that one.

I have a hard time with found footage style movies even when i want to like them. I havent seen anything else here but ill definitely try to check them out! I would add a few Jane Campion movies (i think In The Cut doesnt count but The Piano does, also I think her first two are worthwhile and Angel at My Table is great) and the first 3 mad max movies as well (fury road as well if it counts)

Best OZ films:
(not all made BY Aussies, but how you gonna leave out stuff like Walkabout or Wake In Fright?)
Picnic at Hanging Rock Last Wave The Year of Living Dangerously Bad Boy Bubby Walkabout Wake in Fright Gallipoli Sleeping Dogs Quiet Earth My Brilliant Career Babe (probably not meant to be set in OZ)(but still great) The Piano (Campion is a super SUPER rich kid [look up her family] but she's talented, and this is one of the best films ever made about making art) Rover (preceded John Wick, but has same motivating premise [SPOILERS haha: The key is the very title of the film] and is much better, since John Wick is complete garbage for dullards) Patrick The Long Weekend We of the Never Never Man of Flowers Next of Kin The Odd Angry Shot
I was surprised by the emotional heft of Lake Mungo, especially towards the end. It's a profoundly sad film. I'm no fan of found footage, at least not its modern iterations (post-Blair Witch) but I like stuff like Peter Watkins, Cannibal Holocaust, Man Bites Dog (absolute masterpiece), David Holzman's Diary, Special Bulletin, etc.

For the record, New Zealand is a seperate country from Australia (maybe the key way for y'all to differentiate is that there are less outback serial killers in New Zealand cinema)

The Rover is so good, bummed that Michod has made mostly trash since then.
