I thought this might be an interesting discussion. I've heard many times that every reader has their own preferred Clowes style/approach which leads to clear favorites in his catalogue. What Clowes appeals to you the most? Least favorite? Any that you dislike? Why?
I have my opinions on this, but I want to let others respond first.

The stuff I read first!
I first picked up issue 17, and went back from there. I like it all, and am still reading, but I think my window is between Caricature and Death Ray. BUT I would take David Boring out of that, since I always felt it was a bit long and aimless. I haven't revisited it in years.
I like Patience and Mister Wonderful a lot, but not as much as that other stuff, and I still don't get Wilson. Velvet Glove is fun but kind of empty calories.

Sentimental favorite is Uggly Family, the main reason I preferred Cracked to Mad when I was ten years old.

I like them all. Ice Haven, Ghost World, and David Boring would be my favourites. All the Eightball stuff is better than his post-Eightball books, but I do also like all those ones

Definitely the marginal Eightball content.

Personally, I think Ghost World is his best. Imo it has the best writing and most convincing characters in all his work. My other favorite is Ice Haven. I prefer these more "comic" stylized works over his cinematic ones. Velvet Glove is my least favorite and David Boring is near it. I liked a lot about David Boring's art and themes, but didn't like the way it was all done. I remember enjoying Wilson a lot, but haven't reread it. Death-Ray was one of my favorites, but when I reread it recently, it fell a little flat. The ending really annoys me.

Velvet Glove over everything. The same for me. I wonder if it is because it is the first thing I read of Clowes.

Death Ray and Lloyd Llewellyn. Both big "oh, comics can be like this?" experiences for me on first read.

For a while in the early 2000s it seemed like everybody would say "why can't he do more stuff like Needledick the bugfucker?"

I reread Eightball last year and I felt like Ghost World was such a breath of fresh air when I reached those issues. I just really appreciated the lack of narration after dozens of stories of narration ranting. Granted I enjoy those.
Also Patience, loved it. I hope that one is a successful movie... assuming that'll probably happen.

Wilson rules and I'd love to argue with anyone about it
kevinh - I was about to say Needledick is my favourite Clowes creation, but I don't want to sound like a 2000s guy!
