Agreed on the content, but I've been avoiding this one because of Marvel's usual house treatment of reprints: Digital flats recoloring and thin, shiny plastic paper. How's the in-hand look and feel?

They often have crazy discounts that last just a day or two (think they had the Mike Golden AE for like $75.00 a few weeks back) but I always miss them. What's the deal? I have an account there but do they have a discount notification or something? Also, their search function is literally the worst I have ever seen. Their search is practically useless. I just google "in stock trades [book title]" to find stuff. I don't think they have a newsletter or anything. I found out about this on the Marvel Masterworks forum. It's all a mystery to me! Speaking of Instocktrades. They have the just released Gallery Edition of Born Again on sale for 46% off. www.instocktrades.com/products/jul230829/daredevil-born-again-gallery-edition-hcI have the gallery editions of Weapon X and Warlock and they are pretty good as far as Marvel color reproduction goes these days, which isn’t saying much. But the Near Mint Condition guy did a review of the Born Again gallery edition and it looks like absolute shit. The color is still too over saturated and the art is only barely bigger because of an obnoxious and completely unnecessary red border. They have a significant red border on the edges but did nothing to address gutter loss. Marvel, fire whoever the hell designs your collected reprints. They are garbage.

Re reprint quality and the Taschen sale. I was hoping that vol. 2 of Spider-man would get a discount during the Taschen sale, which it didn’t. Maybe that’s for the best. Amazon and goodreads reviews of the volume are pretty harsh on the art reproduction. They jacked up the contrast, oversaturated greens and yellows, and now the line work looks pretty awful. That’s a terrible shame because volume 1 looks great for something magnified far larger than it really ought to be.

Mazzucchelli has publicly disowned all of the Born Again reprints except the AE/Artisan Edition and the first trade paperback from the 1980s. I agree. Get the original singles, then the AE, then the original trade. Fuck this glossy paper hack designer malarkey gallery edition.

That was something I was wondering too. The Near Mint Condition guy did a review and said the paper was somewhere between matte and glossy. It actually looks decent to me. I'm tempted: youtu.be/0iGuNndgQFU?t=598

It's the usual Marvel recoloring-- super saturated flats, but in recent years they've gone to a softer paper. It's still semi-slick, but much nicer than that old shiny, reflective paper they used to use. I have no issues with the new paper, to me it's good. The saturated colors are a little less eye-smashing on it (I mean that as a positive). But I'm pretty patient when it comes to reprints like this. Could these be produced a little subtler? Sure -- but I just kind of forget about that stuff as I get into the stories. I prefer this approach anyhow, compared to the digital gradients and modern touches added to the DC/EC color reprints.

Fair points, and at $30 vs. $150, that's like a buck sixty a comic. Oh, and if you buy it on a week that you already bought something from them, you can pick it up for $27... Hmmm.

I’m sure this is on most people’s radar already, but Fantagraphics is having its fantabucks, 2 for 1, sale right now. I believe today is the last day.
